The Perfect Father

Happy Sabbath, friends!

This past weekend was Father’s Day in the United States — a day when we honor the fathers of this world and give thanks for all they do in the responsibility of being a father. One thing that came to mind is that we should not only honor and give thanks for our earthly fathers, but also our Heavenly Father.

Father’s Day can bring many different emotions. Some are blessed with wonderful fathers. Others may have lost their fathers, experienced strained relationships, or never knew their fathers at all. No matter what our earthly experiences may be, we can all find comfort in knowing that we have a perfect Heavenly Father who loves us unconditionally and will never leave our side.

1 John 3:1 (NIV)
“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.”

A Father’s Love

Our earthly fathers often strive to protect, provide, guide, teach, and love their families. That is the responsibility of a father — sometimes those expectations are met, and sometimes they are not. We can trust that with our Heavenly Father, those expectations are always met and even surpassed.

He is the Perfect Father — One who protects, provides, guides, teaches, and loves every single one of His children.

The Perfect Father Protects

Our Heavenly Father will always protect His children. We are called to walk in obedience to Him and trust in His loving care.

Psalms 91:1-4 (NIV)
“Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.”

Anytime you are faced with trouble — no matter how big or small — the Lord is with you. Whether He delivers you immediately or carries you through the trial, His protective hand never leaves His children. All we need to do is cry out to Him, knowing that He hears every prayer and works in His perfect timing.

The Perfect Father Provides

Our Heavenly Father not only protects His children — He also provides.

We may experience lack in this world, but when we place our trust in Him, we discover that He is more than enough.

Matthew 6:31-33 (NIV)
“So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

Whenever we experience a need in our lives — whether it is financial, emotional, physical, or spiritual — we can confidently place it into our Heavenly Father’s hands.

Think about the story where Jesus fed more than 5,000 people with only five loaves and two fish. Before performing the miracle, Jesus looked toward heaven and gave thanks to the Father. What seemed impossible became more than enough because it was placed into God’s hands.

Our Heavenly Father still provides in the same way today. No matter how great or small our need may seem, nothing is too difficult for Him.

The Perfect Father Guides

Our Heavenly Father also guides each of His children. Only He knows the plans He has for each of us. That is why we are called to place our complete trust in Him, knowing that He is faithfully leading us toward the future He has prepared for us.

Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV)
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

Whether life brings mountaintops or valleys, twists or turns, we can trust that our Heavenly Father already knows the way ahead. Even when we lose our way, we can call upon Him, and He is faithful to guide us back. When we stumble, He lovingly reaches out His hand to lift us up.

It is never too late to follow Him because He continually invites His children to walk with Him.

The Perfect Father Teaches

Our God is not only a Father, but also a Teacher. When He sent His one and only Son into this world, it was to give us the perfect example of how to live a life that honors Him.

1 Peter 2:21 (NIV)
“To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.”

The Lord teaches us and calls us to obey Him because He loves us. God’s commands are not meant to restrict us — they are given because He desires what is best for His children.

He knows the things that could harm us spiritually, emotionally, physically, and mentally. His teachings are there to protect us, shape our character, and help us live abundant and fruitful lives with Him.

Proverbs 3:11-12 (NIV)
“My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline, and do not resent his rebuke, because the Lord disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.”

The Perfect Father Loves Us Unconditionally

Our Heavenly Father does all these things because He loves us unconditionally.

It doesn’t matter how far we have wandered or what mistakes we have made — He still loves you.

He loves us so much that He doesn’t force His love — He extends it and patiently waits for us to choose Him.

Luke 15:20-24 (NIV)
“So he got up and went to his father. “But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him. “The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ “But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate.”

The Lord celebrates whenever one of His children comes home to Him. We can rest in the truth that our Heavenly Father loves us with an everlasting and unconditional love.

A Prayer Of Gratitude

Thank You, Jesus, for our earthly fathers, but most importantly, for our Heavenly Father.

Thank You for constantly watching over each of us every single day.

Thank You for loving us even when we are undeserving of Your love.

Thank You for never giving up on us, even when we wander or become stubborn.

Thank You for being our Heavenly Father.

You are the perfect Father.

Psalms 136:26 (NIV)
“Give thanks to the God of heaven. His love endures forever.”

Amen.
