“‘For everyone will be seasoned with fire, and every sacrifice will be seasoned with salt. Salt is good, but if the salt loses its flavor, how will you season it? Have salt in yourselves, and have peace with one another’” (Mark 9:49-50 NKJV).
If you know me, I love salt. I am the type of person that once there is a plate of food in front of me, I feel the need to put salt on everything. It is not that the food tastes bad, its that salt magnifies the taste in a sense. When you look in your Bibles, the caption of Mark 9:49-50 is “Tasteless Salt is Worthless”. When I read this verse, it really opened my eyes to the true meaning that was being portrayed.
Let us compare “salt” to our faith, and “flavor” or “seasoning” with the strength or foundation of our faith.
This verse states that “salt is good” so with our comparison that would mean “faith is good”. Then “if the salt loses its flavor, how will you season it?”. Now this part of this verse really stood out to me because if we include our comparison it translates to: “if our faith loses its foundation, how will you strengthen others faith in Christ?”. Wow! Did y’all just see what our comparison brought to light?! Amazing how God’s Word works right?
As Christians we are called to share the good news of Christ. If we lose our foundation with Christ, how will we show others the amazing attributes of Jesus Christ? To delve deeper…let’s check out Mark 9:38:
“Now John answered Him, saying, ‘Teacher, we saw someone who does not follow us casting out demons in Your name, and we forbade him because he does not follow us’” (Mark 9:38 NKJV).
Do you see the error with John’s statement? “…he does not follow us“. People who are trying to find Christ and live a Christian life should not be following “us”. I am going to get real with you and state that as Christians we are called to servant leadership, NOT leadership over Christ. As Christians, we should be uplifting Christ to everyone: non believers, believers who go to different churches, people who believe in different things or even other believers of the same faith and church. “Have salt in yourselves, and have peace with one another”. We should have that strong foundation of faith with Christ, and by having that “seasoning”, we are able to uplift Jesus and show others the flavorful salt that they should try adding onto their food (hehe), but on a serious note: in their lives.
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, please make it an attempt to never force your faith onto others. Be flavorful salt, uplift Jesus, and be at peace with others. Jesus made it a choice to choose Him. A relationship with Him was never meant to be forced.
Amen.
